Dreamkeeper is a 2003 TV film written by John Fusco and directed by Steve Barron. The film stars August Schellenberg, Eddie Spears, Gil Birmingham, Sheila Tousey and Chaske Spencer as Eagle Boy. The main story of the film revolves around a conflict between Lakota elder and storyteller named Pete Chasing Horse and his Lakota grandson.
The film starts by following Eagle Boy who is a young man with a vision quest. Then the film cuts to present day where a 17-year-old Lakota named Shane Chasing Horse lives on the Pine Ridge reservation.
In South Dakota, in an Indian reservation, an old storyteller Indian asks his grandson Shane, who is in trouble owing money to some bad guys, to take his old pony and him to Albuquerque to the great powwow, an Indian meeting. While traveling, Grandpa tells mysterious Indian tales of love, friendship and magic.
As a mini-series TV film, it achieved worldwide success and was acknowledged for its authentic look at Native American culture. Spencer enjoyed his role as Eagle Boy and depicting the real side of his culture that hasn’t been before. The film is an inspiring and detailed look at the lives of young Native Americans living on a reservation in the modern world and tells a compassionate story about how to survive while also growing up within the Native American culture.
